New 2017 Ford Flex

2017 Ford Flex Overview

New/Notable
  • Seat six or seven passengers across three rows
  • Two V-6 engine options; front- or all-wheel drive
  • Available SYNC3 multimedia system
The 2017 Ford Flex is a midsize SUV that seats up to seven passengers across three rows. It shares its platform with the Lincoln MKX. This year, it remains largely unchanged.

Three trim levels are available: SE, SEL, and Limited.

The Flex has a minimalistic appearance compared to other Ford vehicles in the lineup. As a whole, it has an overall blockish, wagon shape. The front-end features a large rectangular grille flanked by geometric headlights and a wide-mouth lower fascia. The A-. B-, C-, and D-pillars are blacked out, drawing more attention to the Flex’s long, flat body line and “floating” rooftop. The side doors feature long, pinstripe channeling for additional visual interest. Standard features include power/heated side mirrors, a dual-pipe exhaust system, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The optional Appearance Package comes with black door handles, window sills, roof, liftgate applique, and grille. HID headlights, and larger 18-, 19-, or 20-inch aluminum wheels are available as well.

Under the hood, there are two V-6 engine options. The base engine offered in the SE, SEL, and Limited models is a 287-hp, 3.5-liter V-6, while a 365-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 is available on Limited models. Both engines are offered with a six-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters are included with the EcoBoost V-6. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional; if you opt for the EcoBoost engine, it is all-wheel drive only.

With the base engine and front-wheel drive, the Flex delivers 16/23 mpg city/highway and upgrading to all-wheel drive drops the fuel economy rating to 16/22 mpg city/highway. The more powerful turbocharged V-6 EcoBoost engine (with all-wheel drive) gets 16/22 mpg.

Inside, the Flex has an upscale cloth interior with front bucket seats, a second-row 60/40-split folding bench seat, and a 50/50-split folding third-row bench seat. The second-row bench seat can be swapped for a pair of reclining bucket chairs. The third-row bench can be upgraded with a power-folding feature that offers tailgate seating, flipping the third row to face rearward for picnics or sporting events. Maximum cargo space is 83.2 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded down. The center stack features the SYNC multimedia system that includes CD/MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB port. It can be upgraded to the SYNC3 multimedia system that includes an 8-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, and a Sony premium audio system. A power driver’s seat, front/rear climate control, and remote keyless entry come standard. Optional features include leather-trim upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, remote vehicle start, and DVD entertainment system and refrigerated console for the rear.

Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, rollover sensors, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, a backup camera, and rear parking sensors which is a welcomed addition on a vehicle of this size. Optional safety features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, a blindspot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, an automated parallel-parking system, and inflatable second-row safety belts that soften the impact of a frontal or side crash, and are compatible with child safety seats.
